This article explains how to automatically create a group hierarchy for a catalog based on a template catalog.
Overview
The Group from template command creates a well-organized group structure in a catalog by referencing a template catalog.
Problem it solves
Some catalogs have only one level of grouping with hundreds of products listed under each group.
How it works
The command cross-references the classification of products between two catalogs:
- Compares product classifications in the target catalog with the template catalog
- For matching classifications, copies the group structure from the template
- Moves products under the appropriate groups based on their classification
Prerequisites
To run the command, the following information is required:
| Parameter | Description |
| Catalog ID | The ID of the template catalog |
| Version ID | The version ID of the template catalog |
The template catalog can be a starter catalog or any other manufacturer catalog with a proper hierarchy.
Running the command
Steps
- Click the three dots next to the catalog name
Select Add Authoring Command Runner
- Find GroupFromTemplate in the command list
- Enter the Catalog ID of the template catalog
- Enter the Version ID of the template catalog
The optional matchingStrategy parameter defines how products are matched: exact-code (matches by identical item codes), classification (matches by baseItemType and characteristics), or both (default, tries exact code first then falls back to classification for maximum coverage).
- Click Execute
Result
After execution, a new group hierarchy is created based on the template catalog structure.
